Your watch history is a detailed map of your interests, your anxieties, and your late nights. Google owns that map — and uses it. YouTube is owned by Google. Every video you watch, search you perform, and comment you post contributes to your Google advertising profile. Watch history and search history are stored indefinitely unless you actively manage them.

For full Google account settings that affect YouTube, see the Google section of this guide. Pause Watch History and Search History in your Google Account settings right now — that’s the most direct way to stop feeding your viewing data into the ad machine.
