Your watch history is a detailed map of your interests, your anxieties, and your late nights. Google owns that map — and uses it. YouTube is owned by Google. Every video you watch, search you perform, and comment you post contributes to your Google advertising profile. Watch history and search history are stored indefinitely unless you actively manage them.
DO / DON’T
DO:
- Pause Watch History and Search History — prevents YouTube from feeding this data into Google’s ad profile
- Set videos you upload to Unlisted or Private by default unless you’re intentionally making them public
- Review your comment history periodically
DON’T:
- Allow YouTube to auto-upload your entire video library
- Post comments using your real name or an identifiable username
- Leave your subscription list public — it reveals your interests and can be used to profile you
Privacy & Ad Settings
Path: youtube.com > Profile icon > Manage your Google Account > Data & Privacy
YouTube privacy is managed through your Google Account:
- YouTube Watch History: Pause — go to Data & Privacy → History Settings → YouTube History
- YouTube Search History: Pause from the same menu
- Auto-delete: Set to 3 months for both Watch and Search history
- Ad Personalization: Turn OFF — prevents YouTube watch data from feeding your Google ad targeting profile
Path: youtube.com > Profile icon > Your data in YouTube
- Review and delete Watch History
- Review and delete Search History
- Manage YouTube activity directly from this dashboard
Delete History
Path: youtube.com > History (left sidebar)
- Clear all watch history — removes the complete viewing record
- Clear search history — removes search record separately
- Pause watch history — prevents new entries from being recorded going forward
- Pause search history — prevents new searches from being recorded
Channel & Video Visibility Settings
Path: YouTube Studio > Content > select a video > Details > Visibility
For any videos you upload:
| Setting | Who Can See | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Everyone | Intentional public content only |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link | Sharing with specific people |
| Private | Only you (and invited viewers) | Personal or sensitive content |
- Default new uploads to Private until you decide otherwise
- Scheduled publish: set to automatically go Public at a specific time if needed
Subscription Privacy
Path: youtube.com > Profile icon > Your channel > Subscriptions
By default, your subscriptions may be visible to others. A public subscription list is a detailed map of your interests.
To make subscriptions private: Profile → Your channel → Manage → Privacy → Keep all my subscriptions private → Save
For full Google account settings that affect YouTube, see the Google section of this guide. Pause Watch History and Search History in your Google Account settings right now — that’s the most direct way to stop feeding your viewing data into the ad machine.
