Your sleep data, heart rate, and body temperature are being stored on a server you don’t control. That’s the trade-off you agreed to. Here’s how to understand the full scope of it — and minimize what leaves your device.
The Oura Ring continuously monitors heart rate, sleep stages, body temperature, blood oxygen, and activity. This biometric data is among the most sensitive personal data that exists — it reflects your physical health, stress levels, sleep patterns, and daily rhythms. Handle data sharing settings with care.
DO / DON’T
DO:
- Review all data sharing settings immediately after setup — not after you’ve been using it for a year
- Be selective about third-party app integrations — your health data is valuable to data brokers
- Export a copy of your data periodically and know how to delete your account before you need to
DON’T:
- Share Oura data with third-party apps unless you understand exactly what they’re collecting and why
- Participate in research programs without reading the data use terms in full
- Use the same password as other services — a breach could expose your complete health history
Data Sharing Settings
Path: Oura app > Profile (bottom right) > Settings > Data Sharing
- Review all enabled data sharing connections
- Apple Health / Google Fit: If enabled, review what data syncs — you may want activity data but not full biometric detail. Enabling this means your data flows to Apple or Google’s ecosystems.
- Other Apps: Review and disable any app integrations you no longer actively use
- Research Programs: Oura offers opt-in research data sharing — review the terms before participating
Privacy Settings
Path: Oura app > Profile > Settings > Privacy
- Review all available privacy options
- Opt out of analytics and data improvement programs if you prefer not to contribute your biometric data to Oura’s research
Help — Data & Privacy
Path: Oura app > Profile > Help > Data & Privacy
- Review Oura’s privacy policy from this menu
- Export Your Data: Request a full export of all collected biometric data
- Use this export to understand the scope of what Oura has collected before making any decisions about continued use
Deleting Your Account
Path: Profile > Settings > Account > Delete Account
- Deleting your account requests removal of your data from Oura’s servers
- Export your data first if you want to retain a personal copy of your biometric history
- After deletion: unlink Apple Health/Google Fit connections if they were active — data already synced may remain in those systems even after your Oura account is deleted
Go to Data Sharing settings and audit every connection. Know which systems your biometric data is flowing into. Then decide which ones you actually need.
