Some apps on your device aren’t what they say they are. They look like calculators. They function as vaults — storing photos, videos, messages, and other content behind a secret passcode. Here’s how to find them, and how to stop them from being installed in the first place.

If you find a hidden app, document it before confronting anyone — the app may be deleted once the person knows you’re looking.

What Are Hidden Apps?

Hidden apps are applications designed to disguise their true function. They appear as something innocent — a calculator, a notes app, a utility tool — but secretly store photos, videos, messages, or other content. They are commonly used to hide content from parents, partners, or device reviewers. Parents, guardians, and anyone reviewing a device should be aware that the home screen doesn’t tell the whole story.

How to Prevent Installation of Hidden Apps

iPhone — Ask to Buy (Family Sharing):

  3. Set up Screen Time (Settings → Screen Time) for content restrictions by age rating

Android — Google Play Parental Controls:

  1. Open Google Play Store → Menu → Settings → Family → Parental Controls

Document before you confront. If you find something, take screenshots or note app names before raising it — once someone knows you’ve found something, the evidence can disappear in seconds.
